Synopsis: Edris is a short documentary about a 17-year-old Eritrean boy who fled the war in his country to settle in Egypt. Since his arrival to Egypt in 2014, Edris has been trying to integrate into the Egyptian society and dreaming to get a chance to become a promising professional football player and help his family back home. Despite being selected by El-Gouna Football club, the Eritrean boy hasn’t been able to play official matches with the team due to his refugee status. The documentary tells a simple story that sheds light on the status of African migrants and refugees in Egypt today.

Director Bio: Amir El-Shenawy is an Egyptian documentary director and producer. He is best known for his feature documentary debut, Kilo 64, which had its world premiere at the Cairo International Film Festival in 2018, earning nominations for both Best Arab Film and Best Artistic Contribution awards, and winning the First Feature Film prize from the National Festival for Egyptian Cinema. His short documentary ‘EDRIS’ won a Special Mention from the jury at the official competition of Carthage Film Festival in Tunisia in 2022. After studying journalism at the Danish School of Media in Denmark in 2011, Amir earned his BA from the American University in Cairo in 2013, majoring in Media Arts and double minoring in Film and Arab & Islamic Civilizations. He then received his MA in Screen Documentary from Goldsmiths University, London, in 2017. A recipient of the Chevening Scholarship and a Fellow of Film Independent, Amir is also an alumnus of the Rotterdam Lab, a training workshop for the most promising young producers organized by the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Since 2021, El Shenawy has been an adjunct faculty at the American University in Cairo where he teaches filmmaking courses. Amir is currently working on his second feature documentary project, American Dream.
